Booktalk
It is thousands of years ago, and King Hrothgar's people are haunted and hunted by creatures of darkness. Known as the Scyldings, the people were once a great nation; now they live in terror. Their only hope lies with the sudden arrival of strangers: the sea-faring warriors from Geatland.
In this atmospheric graphic novel blending action and storytelling, watch Beowulf, chief of the Geat warriors, do battle with a series of monsters: the ink-black Grendel rises from the swamp, raiding the royal hall at night and wreaking havoc; Grendel's mother, a troll-wife skulking in her rust-blooded caverns; and finally, in a bleak dust-gray land by the sea, a dragon whose bite may be Beowulf's doom. Hinds's expressionistic artwork, rich in color and detail, brings the legend to life, with battle scenes bursting from panel to panel.
