Annotation
When Sprout Bradford moves with his father from New York to Kansas, he can't help sticking out in his new school, so he dyes his hair green and befriends Ruthie, the 6-foot tall girl who always gets what she wants. It doesn't take her long - or most other people - to figure out that Sprout is gay. But coming out is the least of his problems.
Booktalk
What is Sprout Bradford's secret?
It's no secret that he's gay. The whole school knows that, even before he's come out. It's no secret that his mom died of cancer. It's no secret that he lives with his dad and a bunch of tree stumps in a vine-covered trailer in the middle of the woods, or that his dad is a drunk. It's no secret that Sprout's been spending a lot of time with Mrs. Miller, the English teacher, or that she's also kind of a drunk. It's also no secret - or not much of one - that Mrs. Miller and his dad are hooking up.
Sprout's secret has more to do with Ian the jock, who's maybe not as much of a bully as he seems. It might have something to do with his best friend Ruthie, who's maybe more of an enemy than a friend. It might have something to do with Ty, the new kid at school, who's sure he's not gay, but wants to spend all his time with Sprout anyway.
