Watchmen

Moore, Alan. Watchmen. Illus. Dave Gibbons and John Higgins. New York: DC Comics, 2005. Print.

Annotation
Set on an alternate Earth where, following the comics craze of the 1940s, superheroes became a real and pervasive presence in the world, Watchmen follows a group of these washed up heroes in the midst of a conspiracy to take over the world. Made into a fairly terrible movie in 2009.

Booktalk
Who watches the Watchmen?

That's the question on everyone's lips in a world where superheroes are very real, very undesirable elements of society. There's the Comedian: a psychotic and violent Vietnam vet with little to laugh at; Nite Owl: one in a line of aging, depressed playboys with lots of money and few friends; Silk Spectre: the alluring daughter of one of the original league of heroes; Rorschach: a dangerous, anonymous renegade; Ozymandias: the smartest man in the world; and Dr. Manhattan: byproduct of an atomic experiment gone wrong, and the only hero on earth with truly supernatural abilities.

When strange occurrences force the Watchmen to come out of hiding, and an apparent alien attack devastates New York City, a very real plot to take the world hostage makes the Watchmen Earth's last hope. Suspensefully related among myriad flashbacks and subplots, the classic anti-superhero graphic novel is collected here in one volume.

The Watchmen watch the world. Who watches the Watchmen?
