A Wizard of Earthsea

Le Guin, Ursula K. A Wizard of Earthsea. Illus. Ruth Robbins. Berkeley, CA: Parnassus Press, 1968. Print.

On the sea he wished to meet it, if meet it he must... Out of the sea there rise storms and monsters, but no evil powers: evil is of earth  (p.152).

Annotation
Taking place in a mythical land of islands, A Wizard of Earthsea tells the coming of age story of Ged, a young man who learns the ways of wizards. Traveling from island to island, Ged faces many dangers, and leaves behind his youthful pride and arrogance for great wisdom.

(The first of six novels and several short stories surrounding the world of Earthsea; drawings include a series of maps by Ruth Robbins.)

Booktalk
Earthsea - an archipelago, a world of tiny islands dotting the vast ocean. It is a land where farmers and goatherders live in fear of the raiding Kargans, and the practical magic of wizards is a part of daily village life.

Sparrowhawk, whose secret name is Ged, is simply a bronzesmith's son. But he is also the nephew of a witch, and magic runs in his veins. He is sent to train with Ogion, a wizard of the mountain, before traveling to the Isle of Roke to learn sorcery at the hands of the Archmage and the Nine Masters.

He will face dragons and spirits, and men who want to enslave him. Ged is promising, but arrogant; in trying to summon the dead he will unleash a dark spirit into Earthsea, one that will stalk island to island, always seeking to find and possess him. In the end, Ged must travel to the edge of the world and confront what haunts him in order to become a true Wizard of Earthsea.
